【１】年頭あいさつ

一般社団法人日本地質学会　会長　石渡　明

2013年の年頭に当たり，日本地質学会理事会を代表して会員の皆様にごあいさつを申しあげます．昨年5月に日本地質学会の会長に就任してから半年が経ちました．昨年は一昨年と異なり，5月の新潟県でのトンネル工事現場での天然ガス爆発事故や梅雨前線や台風に伴う豪雨災害は多少あったものの，大きな地震や火山噴火はなく，地学現象による災害は比較的少ない年でした．まず本学会に関連する昨年の動きを振り返りますが，特に最近の3ヶ月間は地質学会にとって様々な事がございました．

【３】巽　好幸会員 米国地球物理連合(AGU)の2012年度ボーエン賞を受賞
──────────────────────────────────
巽　好幸会員（神戸大学教授）がAGU秋季大会（サンフランシスコ）において2012年12月4日に同連合の火山・地球化学・岩石学（VGP)部会からボーエン賞(Bowen Award)を受賞し，「安山岩問題：なぜこの惑星は地球であるのか」と題する記念講演を行った．
（VGP部会ニューズレターによる受賞理由）巽氏はマグマプロセス及び地殻の進化を明らかにするための実験的研究，野外岩石学的研究，それらに関連する理論的モデル研究において，多数の本質的に重要な貢献を行った．彼はホットスポット及び海洋沈み込み帯（特に伊豆・小笠原・マリアナ島弧系）におけるマグマ活動及びくさび型マントルにおけるマグマ移動システムの理解において中心的役割を演じた．

- VGP Awards
The Bowen Award for 2012 is given to Dr. Yoshiyuki Tatsumi of Kobe University.
Dr Tatsumi has made numerous fundamental contributions to our knowledge of magmatic processes and their role in understanding the evolution of the Earth's crust through laboratory experiments, field-related petrological studies and associated modeling. He has been central in advancing our knowledge of magmatism in hot-spots and subduction zones (especially the Izu-Bonin-Marianas intraoceanic subduction system), and transport processes in the mantle wedge.
Congratulations to Yoshiyuki. VGP members will be looking forward to his lecture as one of highlights of Fall AGU.
The 2012 Kuno Awardee is Rajdeep Dasgupta. Raj was educated at Jadavpur University and University of Minnesota, completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, and is currently a faculty member in the Department of Earth Sciences at Rice University. Raj's greatest contributions lie in the area of the deep carbon cycle, specifically investigations of the partial melting behavior of carbonated eclogite and peridotite. Most recently, he has turned his attention to the problem of how to distinguish basalts generated by melting of different mantle lithologies using major element chemistry.
